That one had a definite hard-boiled detective feel to it, whereas this one definitely operates within the realm of military science fiction. I mention all this mostly because at no point in this whole process did I think there was going to be any chance that I might actually like this book.īROKEN ANGELS is the second book in the Takeshi Kovacs series and is a significant departure from the first. So I figured, why not grab a quick read and see what came of it? But the opportunity to dive in was quickly afforded me when I was asked to chaperone for a couple days at a girl’s camp my daughter was attending. So, I picked it up with no real intention to read it any time soon. The thickness of the spine made it look like it was going to be relatively short too. Then, randomly, I found a copy of the second book in the series at one of the second-hand bookstores that I frequent, and the thing was only two bucks. Still I thanked the reader for the comment and proceeded on my merry way. If I’m being completely honest, I wasn’t too high on the idea, as I’ve never really been overly enamored with Richard K. So, a few months ago, one of our readers commented on my review for ALTERED CARBON ( EBR Review) that I should look into the second and third books in this series.

Then the match was dropped on the cobbles, where it hissed out, and the figure said: “What are you?” Water cascaded off a metal helmet and an oiled leather cloak as the figure stopped and, entirely unconcerned, cupped its had in front of its face and lit a cigar. In the darkness of the inner city, above the rustle of the never-ending rain, it heard the sound of boots approaching. Animals! Birds! Changing shape! Screaming and yelling! And, above it all, higher than the rooftops, a lamb rocking back and forth in great slow motions, thundering over the cobbles…Īnd then bars had come down, slamming down, and the entity had been thrown back.īut it had been so close! It had saved the creature, it was getting through, it was beginning to have control… and now this… The entity cowered in its alley, where the mist was rising. But within it, a city, shadowy and only real in certain ways. This book sold more than two million copies and has been translated into more than 30 languages. Van Deusen, University of Alberta, in Scandinavian-Canadian Studies I will most certainly be using this translation when I teach Norse mythology in the future and will recommend it to anyone looking for an approachable introduction to the subject.” Crawford’s knowledge of and passion for the topic is clear throughout, and he strikes an excellent balance between approachability and authenticity. “n excellent and entertaining work that succeeds in achieving its intended purpose: to create an accessible and readable English translation of the Poetic Edda.
